S-System Hand Pumps for European Import Keg Dispensing
S-system party pumps tap kegs fitted with an S-system (European Sankey) valve — the standard for most European import lagers sold in the US. If you're serving Heineken, Amstel, Stella Artois, or similar imports at an event and don't have CO2 equipment, an S-system hand pump is what you need.
Compatible Brands
S-system couplers fit the majority of European import kegs, including:
- Heineken
- Amstel
- Stella Artois
- Newcastle Brown Ale
- Delirium
- Leffe
- Estrella Damm
Note: Guinness, Harp, and Kilkenny use U-system, not S-system — always confirm your keg's coupler type with your distributor before ordering, since import brands occasionally vary.
The Oxygen Tradeoff
Like all hand pumps, S-system party pumps push air (oxygen) into the keg to create dispensing pressure. Oxygen stales beer quickly:
- Best within 8–12 hours of first pump
- Noticeably flat and stale by 24 hours
- Undrinkable within 48–72 hours
For multi-day events or any situation where beer quality matters, use a CO2 picnic tap instead. CO2 keeps beer fresh for the full event duration.
Best For
- Single-day parties and events where the keg will be finished
- Large gatherings with fast keg turnover
- Situations where CO2 equipment isn't available
S-System Pump FAQ
Does Guinness use an S-system hand pump?
No — Guinness uses a U-system valve, not S-system. S-system covers beers like Heineken, Amstel, and Stella Artois. Confirm your specific import's coupler type before ordering, since the wrong system won't connect.
Can I use an S-system pump on a domestic US keg?
No — domestic US kegs use D-system (Sankey) valves, a different fitting than European S-system. You'd need a D-system pump for domestic beers instead.
